9 times out of 10 the only part in this kit needed to get your refrig back on the air is the defrost heater element. The kit comes with a thermostatic switch and a temp sensor, but these parts rarely fail and replacing them requires more disassembly of the refrig.However, the heater element fails frequently. This is the third time in 20 years I’ve replaced mine. The replacement interval is roughly 5 years, and is indicated by poor cooling in both compartments and a build up of thick frost on the back wall of the freezer compartment.This is the sequence of tasks to replace the burned out heating element:1. Empty the freezer compartment and remove its shelves. Leave your food in the warmer side of the refrig and keep its door closed.2. Manually break up/break off the thick frost that has grown in the rear of the freezer compartment. If the frig is kept off (=de-powered) for an hour or so this is easier to accomplish. By breaking off much of the frost bergs you reduce the amount of water released by task #4 in this list.3. Remove the vertical white sheet metal panel that covers the back of the freezer compartment using a Philips screwdriver.4. Allow the freezer to defrost for several hours. At some point melting will expose the heating element and it can be removed and replaced with the new one. My burned out heating element had turned black and contained water.Don’t get carried away with totally defrosting the entire area behind the vertical white panel because you have food in the right compartment that is going bad. You need only defrost the freezer compartment just enough to free up the heating element from its mount.The remainder of the ice will be dealt with decisively by the new heating element once installed.5. Reinstall the white vertical panel, shelves and re-power the frig.FWIW, I noticed that the qty=2 5mm push-on electrical terminals that attach to the ends of the heating element weren’t as “grabby” as they should be. At 5 amps these terminals need to squeeze the matching blades in the ends of the heating element with some force. To re-establish the “grabby” force of new push-ons, pinch closed the claws of the push-on terminals with needle nosed pliers.Though I have done this task three times on my GE refrigerator, a newbie with mechanical skills could accomplish the job in 4 hours including thawing time. Actual work done is less than 1/4 of that time.Have fun. I’m eager to see if I can wring another 5 years out of this GE 25 cubic foot side-by-side because its replacement now costs $2k.

Bought Aug. 2023, its now July 2024. Now working anymore. I tested other part thinking it could be something else. But is was not. Buy at your own risk.

Works well. Easy to install. Unplug the refrigerator first. The wire colors matched up easily. Desant value for the money. It did for correctly just make sure you measure the old one. The previous one burnt out and smelled like burnt plastic.Cons: it only last about 4-6 months before you have to replace it.If you have a power outage or surge, can burn it out

My refrigerator was not holding temperature correctly and the compressor was consistently turned on. This is the second time this part has been replaced in the refrigerator, so I knew the defroster had likely failed again. The first time I called the technician to have it replaced and watched how they did it. After the part failed a year later, I ordered this part on Amazon and did the replacement myself. there are many helpful videos on other websites. They can show you exactly how to replace the park if youâve never seen it done before. This part fit perfectly, and has been working since it was installed several months ago. The original part lasted for 15 years. Time will tell if this part is as durable as an OEM part.

My eight-year old GE fridge stopped defrosting two months ago. Frost would build up on the back wall until the blower fan would just turn on continuously, raising the temp in the freezer to 30 or so and the fridge temp up to 55. It would never get out of that cycle.Some YouTube research told me it was almost certainly the burned-out heating element underneath the coils. The OEM GE part was $125 and that was just for the heating element alone. I found this package here on Amazon with the heating element AND the two thermistors that GE recommends you replace at the same time you replace the heating element. So if I bought OEM GE parts this project would have cost me more than $200 just in parts. Ridiculous.I have very little experience with appliance repairs but this took me less than 30 minutes to replace the heating element and both thermistors in the freezer. Fixed the defrosting issue no problem. Very happy with this package!
