Hotpoint (GE) Thermostat/Defrost Heater Kit Makes Fridge Like New!
This combo unit is a thermostat along with two glass radiant defrost heaters. Upon initial installation and operation, as it was in my case, it may seem as if the heaters are extremely hot. I believe this happened because my defrost timer was in or near the defrost position when I first turned on the refrigerator after installing the new parts. FYI: The defrost timer operates in 16 Hours ON/cooling – 30-35 Minutes OFF/Defrost cycles. So, if your refrigerator compressor does not begin to function after 35 minutes, you may also (or only) need a new defrost timer. Anyway, after the 24 hour stabilization period, my refrigerator and freezer are working great maintaining perfect cooling (â33°F) and freezing (â-10°F) temperatures…Best that I can remember even before needing to replace the thermostat/heaters. Plus, the compressor doesn’t seem to turn on/stay on as often as before.After removing the old defrost heaters, I could easily see they were burnt-out…From visual appearance/inspection, I believe one heater was burnt-out for quite a while before the second one finally ceased. This was probably why, for quite some time, my compressor was going on more often and longer although the refrigerator/freezer seemed to be working fine. Now, both my refrigerator and freezer compartments are much better consistently cooled/frozen.Overall, I am happy with this solution and expect to get another 15+ years use from my refrigerator.Other Info:I recommend completely (manually) defrosting your refrigerator before installing this kit…you’ll get much better immediate and efficient results. Also, you may need some other low-cost item/sensor such as a defrost timer or refrigerator temperature sensor…even a main board is usually less than $100.00 and all worth it if your fridge is still in good shape otherwise.

If you have a fridge on the fritz and this is the right part…GET IT
Bought the fridge for $100 off craigslist. Was told it had issues and I went over it (I have NO experience with fridges or other appliances) and saw the defroster was a mess. Bought this and it fixed the problem. Now I have a perfectly functional outside fridge for my garage (it’s well over 110 degrees in there during the summer with the freshly run car parked 3 feet away). Easy to install and costs $80 LESS than the local guys would sell it to me for (and that includes shipping!!!!)

Nice replacement for GE
I have a Hotpoint fridge (made by GE) that was running constantly but not cooling properly. After a little investigation I discovered frost all over the back panel of the freezer. After taking it apart and defrosting it by hand I started looking for replacement heater. After checking the GE site and reading some reviews I measured the freezer width to make sure this was the correct part and bought it. These heaters have two heating elements, one in the middle and one at the bottom. ONE STAR to GE for designing a two element SERIALLY wired heater, where if one goes out neither work. (remember the cheap christmas lights that won’t work when one bulb is burnt out!) I found that the bottom heating element was the one that failed and initially considered just taking one from this set and replacing it but after looking over the wiring on this unit decided to swap the entire harness and keep the OLD working element as a spare (along with its thermostat). A side by side freezer is a little narrow (and deep) to work comfortably in but the swap out went very smoothly (about 30 minutes) and several months have gone by with no problems.If you’ve never caught your defrosters in action they do get warm and glow behind that panel in the back of the freezer. I put a couple of spacer blocks on the back of the shelves where the heating elements are so I don’t have frozen stuff against the rear panel. I think I know what caused the occasional thawed/refrozen look I’ve seen occasionally.hint: if you do keep any ‘spare’ parts from the old harness, put them in a little container in the freezer so you can find them if needed.

Genuine GE, but not the same part
The defroster elements have the correct power rating, but are about 2 inches shorter than the original ones. I had to modify the metal shields from the old set and fit them to the new shields in order to provide a way to mount them to the evaporator assembly. After testing 24 hours through a few cycles, can confirm these will work. Mfg. date was May 2023. This assembly replaced the originals that had a Mfg. date of 1998.Part number did match item description, as well as all cross-references I could find. Maybe for technicians, these come with a retrofit kit. All I got was the bare unit (in new unused condition) wrapped in bubble wrap inside the Amazon box. Half an hour with a dremel and a little cutting on the old shields is a decent DIY retrofit. Hope this unit also lasts 20+ years.

… articles exactly as what I was expecting. I replaced the old and damaged defrost heater (d.h.) with one of these new ones (I bought two, for just in case…). So far this new one has worked good, then the second one is stored in its original box. The reason for me to buy two is because I have had not so good experiences with other d. heaters I got from another suppliers. I am giving 4 stars, only because it is too soon to know if the piece is going to last as expected (when I bought the refrigerator, the original d.h. lasted several years, so if this new one will work fine for more than a year, it would be fantastic).
