  1. Outdoors Guy

Great variety of heat/ time settings, warm and powerful light!
I fell on the ice about a month ago and broke some ribs. The pain is horrible, and it really wracked my back out of alignment. I have knots in the muscles of my back and I’m in constant pain. The chiropractors and massage therapists don’t want to see me because the broken ribs are a concern for them. I hurt, and I’m looking for anything that will give me some relief. I ordered this lamp, hoping that it could help to make things better. The lamp has a fantastic amount of different settings that you can put it on. There are 10 power levels, and 12 time settings that are in five minute increments. They range from 0 to 60 minutes. It’s a great amount of settings for a lamp like this. The base is heavy and solid so it’s unlikely to tip over, at least not easily. It oivots and swivels, as well as the head can be adjusted up or down..As many options as there are for how to move this lamp, I did find that it’s not good for using on your back. I tried to put it on an end table in our living room next to my recliner. As many options as there are for how to move this lamp, I did find that it’s not good for using on your back. I tried to put it on an end table in our living room next to my recliner. I had to lean forward the whole time in an awkward position for the light to hit my back. It’s no fault of the lamp, it’s just my inexperience and lack of knowledge on these types of lamps. It’s something I never thought of before ordering it.So even though I was not able to use the lamp for its intended purpose, and I didn’t get much relief out of my back from it, it still helps with just making the place feel warmer and heating you up during these miserable cold winter months. It’s a well built lamp and I’m sure that it’s only a matter of time before I have another injury or ache and pain where I will be able to use this and get some relief. I have no complaints with this lamp.

    There are better, safer options
THE GOOD:This gets very warm, which can feel quite nice on a boo-boo area, to be sure.I like the weight of the base, which should allow you to get it in just about any position you need without worrying about it tipping over, which is very important considering how hot this gets (see below). The remote control is intuitive and easy to navigate. It’s the perfect height for a table, if you’re sitting near it, or even just a footstool depending on the height.Easy to put together and get up and running.THE SO-SO:For good tissue penetration, the best set up is infrared, coupled with near-infrared. This unit only does infrared. I believe this is likely because near infrared doesn’t provide the kind of heat that infrared alone can, and would make this unit much cooler.I used this on my injured knee for 30 minutes at the highest setting. The warmth felt great, but the lasting effect of pain relief did not compete with my infrared and near-infrared unit. With the latter, the pain is relieved for days–sometimes permanently after just a few treatments. With this, it felt better while I was using it, but the effects faded within minutes of turning it off.THE CONCERNING:The instructions say you can use this for “up to 60 minutes.” It’s my understanding that anything over 30 minutes is a waste of time with infrared light. If you’re just using it for heat, you could get a heating pad for less money. If you’re expecting tissue repair, I doubt that’s actually happening, based on my experience with this unit vs. several other units that I own. Even if this were effective for tissue repair, infrared stops repairing after about 25-30 minutes. It’s better to do multiple session than one 60-minute one.Of bigger concern is the fact that the entire head of this lamp gets very hot. I accidentally brushed against the back of it and I quickly pulled back; a second more and I’m sure I would have sustained a burn. It was like brushing against a hot pan on the stove. I wouldn’t use this around children or pets, and I certainly would wait 15 minutes or so after turning it off before touching ANY area near or around the head. I would say, with about 80% confidence, that if you left this on and unattended and it somehow fell over, it could easily start a fire. If nothing else, it would definitely melt the fibers of whatever fabric (blanket, pillow, couch, carpet) it toppled onto. That’s 100% sure.Even MORE concerning is that the remote control gets VERY hot while this unit is on. Eventually, it does cool down, after about ten minutes of the unit being turned off. The remote should NOT be getting hot. It’s plastic, for one thing, and it’s definitely a part that you may want or need to touch while the unit is operating. I don’t know if I got a faulty unit, or if this is standard, but it’s a problem to the point that I probably won’t use this again. There are many units on the market that will include both IR and NIR lighting, which is far more beneficial to healing soft tissue than this unit, and many of them are less than the $66 price tag on this one. None of them, in my experience, get this hot, either. Granted, the heat from that bulb feels nice on an injury, but I have heating pads for that, and the heat that this generates in parts of the unit that a person either needs to touch or could easily accidentally touch is dangerous, in my opinion. It gets two stars because the warmth feels nice on an injury. But it’s unsafe in my opinion, and the therapeutic benefits are too short-lived.

Very good heat lamp .. with some reservations
I have just used the heat lamp for the first time and I am pretty pleased with the results with some reservations. The results of the heat lamp seemed to be good, but did not last that long, however, I am hoping this will improve with continued use. As a number of other reviewers have mentioned, the cord is very short which makes it difficult to use as the place I wanted to use it did not work and I had a sit in a slight uncomfortable position. I was also a little apprehensive about how hot the lamp was when touched. I understand this can be corrected by using an LED infrared light bulb which is much cooler, but that is an addition $30 + cost. My other concern were the number of spelling errors in the directions for use and statements that did not make sense … maybe a language issue? My doctor recommended an infrared lamp after my knee procedure and I will definitely continuing using it.
